BED & BREAKFAST SUITES Upstairs in the main house are 3 guest suites -- Courtney, Matthew, and Brandt -- as announced on decorative brass door knockers. They are connected by a landing outfitted as a reading room with bookshelves and window seat overlooking gardens. A refrigerator and microwave tucked into a closet makes this a perfect place to relax with morning coffee or afternoon tea. The current owners have installed new central heat, air and insulation throughout the bed & breakfast area. The Courtney Suite is a more feminine ladies or honeymoon suite. It features pale blue walls and a romantic fireplace. The charming Victorian bathroom/changing room has a claw foot tub, separate shower and even a fireplace. Staying here, you're transported back to another era. The Brandt Suite is a more masculine counterpart with navy walls and another fireplace. It is surrounded by a brick patio with plenty of room to lay out in the sun and hedges tall enough to provide complete privacy. It also includes a pool house with half bath. Nighttime lighting transforms the space into a true oasis as the sun goes down. HISTORY OF LINWOOD INN The main house was built in 1883 by Julia Drayton Hastie and her husband William Hastie. At that time, it was known as "Hastie House." The location was chosen because it was one block to the train station where William could take the "Best Friend" (the first passenger train in the US) to his insurance office at 44 Broad Street in downtown Charleston. It's also only 5 blocks from Main Street in Summerville. Julia and William lived there with her father, the Reverend John Grimke Drayton, who owned Magnolia Planation. He also brought camellias and azaleas from the gardens at Magnolia to Linwood's romantic garden. The kitchen, which now houses a separate one-bedroom unit, also dates to 1883. The house survived the earthquake of 1886 with some damage. In the late 19th century, the fresh air coming through the pines made Summerville internationally known as one of the best places to treat tuberculosis and other lung and throat disorders. Accordingly, around this time, sleeping porches were added to the house. They are now enclosed and comprise parts of the Owners' Suite and Guest Suites. Reverend Drayton died at Hastie House in 1891, at which time Julia inherited Magnolia Plantation. However, she continued to live at Linwood until 1901, then moved to Magnolia. In 1914, approximately 2 acres at the back of property were sold. This land had housed servants' quarters, a shed, stables and the stable yard. The Guest House was built in the 1920s and the Cottage in 1970. Peter and Linda Shelbourne bought the property in 1979. Linda is a Master Gardener and lovingly restored the gardens after Hugo in 1989. The couple has operated Linwood Inn as a bed & breakfast since 1995. GUEST HOUSES In addition to the main house bed & breakfast with 3 guest suites, Linwood Inn consists of 3 free-standing 2-bedroom guest houses and an efficiency apartment in the former kitchen on the ground level of the house. These are currently used as corporate or vacation rentals. There is a separate entrance to the property and parking lot for rentals, separating them from the main residence. All guest houses have laundry facilities and come fully furnished (including some antiques) and appointed, so visitors can move right in. HAY BARN Built 2007, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, 1425 sq.ft.
